Learning German in Germany is the best way to dwell into the learning experience. And if you are living in a country where most of the people around you are native speakers of that language, it is natural that you adapt the same in few days. You may consider yourself lucky enough to live in Germany and observe the disciplined life of Germans & their diverse culture. The following are few points to remember based on my personal experience.

Be Restless!
Get the most out of your stay in Germany. In addition to your visit to historical places and ‘beer’ festival, start roaming around the very locals of the place. Interaction with the locals will give you more exposure to the diversity of their language. Sometimes, you may find some pure German words and phrases that are very specific to Germany. Fundamentally it depends on the purpose of you visit. A traveler’s visit helps you to interact more then just a business visit that keeps you busy all the time. But still, Germany is a place of weekends, where you will find every German having beer or dancing in a Salsa bar!

Make Friends!
Once you start interacting with people around you, you might find a good friend. He or she will then help you cover your German learning curve steeply. Visiting public places like bars during weekends is a good idea to meet people more closely and find your self a good friend or a group!

Be Graceful!
Make sure your intention is not wrong or to hurt anyone’ feelings. Whenever one start learning a foreign language he or she misses some ethical details of the lingo, so if that happens to you, don’t forget to apologize and admit! After you develop an adaptable attitude of learning German language in Germany, you will be accepted within the German community to help you absorb more!

Do your homework!
Carry with you a set of those pocket phrase books and dictionary. Make sure you read them, before you step on to the German lands, as you will require at least asking for directions and hiring a taxi phrases. Other useful words and phrases will help you while shopping, buying clothes, and bargaining, buying food and snacks in a restaurant or a bar etc. Reading short stories, comics and the books that allows you to relate with English easily is another good option to learn German.

In fact, learning a different language in addition to one’s first language can be a fun experience but it can become tedious if the chosen language program is not as effective as it’s described. However, in learning the German language, similar to other major foreign languages can be made easier with the aid of memorization techniques. The memorization techniques, during the learning process can be applied directly while the student is doing other tasks or normal daily activities.

One example of a memorization technique useful in learning the German language is the use of picture associations. It would be a lot better if the words in German and English associated are linked to funny or silly stories or scenarios since this method helps the memory retain and recall the silly interpretation.

An example would be the word twelve in English and Zwolf in German. Picture a snow sled filled with twelve wolves being pulled by its owner. The scenario is strange enough to be remembered. So the picture itself immediately sticks in the memory followed by the words twelve and its German equivalent zwolf.

The following tips to learn German are personal recommendations that you probably won’t get from a teacher. But it’s worth giving them a try.

Picture Dictionaries

Picture Dictionaries are books that differ significantly from what you would expect from a regular dictionary. They are made up of different themes – such as “At the airport” or “in the supermarket”. They will show many pictures – mostly things and situations that fit this specific theme and mention the words below the picture in English and German – and maybe many other languages. You might think this is just for kids. But any adult can get such a great deal of information out of a picture dictionary. It makes learning fun, visual and context sensitive. Most people learn better in a visual way. So these mostly 2-sided themes will help you tremendously because they summarize the most relevant vocabulary for a theme clustered together with pictures that are fun to look at and to browse through. I use them myself regularly and it just doesn’t feel like you are learning – it’s as relaxing as going through a magazine. But the amount of content you pick up this way is amazing. Think of it: It resembles much more reality than learning pairs of printed words. A word is just an abstraction of something real. So when you are learning pairs of words you are dealing with two abstractions tied together. However, we tend to think in pictures. Your mind has to do two things: Translate the picture in your mind to an English word, translate the English word into the German word by looking up that word pair you memorized. So when you look in picture dictionaries you get the words associated directly with pictures in your mind.

Sometimes a picture dictionary is the only way to explain a certain thing to a non-native speaker, because in many situations we cannot explain what we mean even in our own language – particularly certain types of food or special technical terminology.

Advertisements

Another unusual way to learn German – as well as any language is through advertisements. Why ads? Because ads are made by professional marketing experts for just one thing: Transport a message clearly and quickly and get in your memory and make you remember it. That’s exactly what you want when you learn a language. A teacher or a textbook author does not come close to the effectiveness of the communication professionals in the agencies. So while you may not like to be bothered by ads in your own language you should take a look at them in the language you want to learn. Certain phrases will store themselves in your brain instantly remain in your memory for a long time. Most of them are short, funny and easy to remember. Eh, it’s advertisement isn’t it?

Picture Associations

When you hear a word in German that does not resemble anything you know in English try to think if this word reminds you of anything funny or strange that your know. The more unusual the association the better. Consider the German word ‘Kissen’ which means ‘pillow’. Just think of yourself kissing your girlfriend/boyfriend on a pillow. This association makes sense and is easy to memorize. The best thing: It involves emotions. Emotions are a great accelerator for memorizing and remembering things. It doesn’t even have to be positive emotions. Negative feelings work as well. Anything that is not boring will make you remember the words you wanted to remember.

What You Should NOT Do

Although it might seem tempting DO NOT use music and song lyrics to learn German or any other foreign language. Most songs contain either a form of dialect, inappropriate slang or rude language. Many songs play with language by falsifying it and twisting it around. Some use very old-fashioned and poetry-style language. So don’t use it.

Don’t read German newspapers. Most of them are very political and use a terminology which is extremely hard to understand. The sentences are extremely long, so usually when you get to the end you cannot remember how it started. Newspapers are clearly for the advanced language learner. So please stay away from them in the beginning.

There are many Internet sites with all kinds of courses you can take to help you learn German free of charge. Whether you are just beginning your studies in the German language or you want to take a refresher course, you will find what you need.  There are also many free reference tools for you to use online to help you with aspects of the courses, such as dictionaries, explanations for the rules of grammar, practice exercises and more. You don’t need to shell out any money for tuition, nor do you need to live in a German speaking community to gain the knowledge you need to become fluent in the language.

Start your course in German by learning some common phrases. You do need to use a site where you can hear these phrases being read by a native speaker so that you learn the correct pronunciation right away instead of learning the phrases in isolation and then have to change the way you speak them.  Some of the commonly used phrases in German are:

- Ja ? yes

- Nein ? no

- Bitte ? please

- Danke ? thank you

- Bitte schon ? you welcome

- Guten morgen ?good morning

- Guten abend ?good evening

- Guten nacht ?good night

- Sprechen sie Englisch? ?Do you speak English?

Through learning some simple phrases, such as these, you also pick up some German vocabulary. For example, you learn that means good and means do you speak?

When you take a free course in German, you will learn the alphabet and the sounds of the letters, the rules of grammar and how to conjugate the verbs. Take full advantage of games in the German language because these will extend and reinforce your learning and you will have fun at the same time. When learning any new language it is important that you make it enjoyable. Don’t underestimate the power of song when learning German because through simple songs you also gain new vocabulary words.

As you listen to the native German speakers reading passages in the course, make sure you pay attention to the pronunciation of the words. Listen to each passage several times and then practice reading it on your own. If you are not sure how well you are doing, record your reading and them play it to compare it to that of the native speakers online.

As you complete each module of the course, complete the practice exercises and then take the tests on each one. If you find that you have made mistakes, review the material and the instruction to determine where you made the mistakes. It is important for you to fully understand the concept of each lesson before you proceed. This is because each lesson builds on the one before and assumes that you have mastered the concept. If you rush through the course, you may miss important features that you will need to know in later lessons. Time and practice are the two main ingredients in learning German and since it is free, you can take all the time you need to get it right.
