Want to Make Language Learning Easier? Rhymes to the Rescue!

   By Kathy Steinemann

Learning a foreign language can be enjoyable – but exasperating. Anything you can do to accelerate learning or make language acquisition more enjoyable is a valuable weapon in your learning arsenal. Kathy Steinemann shares a helpful and unique approach to this challenge.

Learning a foreign language can be enjoyable – but exasperating. Anything you can do to accelerate learning or make language acquisition more enjoyable is a valuable weapon in your learning arsenal. Kathy Steinemann shares a helpful and unique approach to this challenge.

Take a look at the following two sections of text:

Version 1

The sky is blue today.
I’m sitting on the beach.
A bully kicks sand in my face.
Too bad for him!
Here come my bodyguards!

Version 2

One, two, a sky so blue.
Three, four, a sandy shore.
Five, six, a bully kicks.
Seven, eight, he’s sealed his fate.
Nine, ten, here come my gunmen!

Now go back and re-read the verses.

Did you notice that you have already started to anticipate what comes next in the second version?

Conclusion: It is easier to memorize rhyming poetry than to memorize prose.

So what implication does this have for learning a foreign language?

If you memorize well written modern foreign language poetry, you can accelerate your learning curve. (Notice the keyword ‘modern’.)

Poetry written in the 18th Century may have deep cultural and educational significance. However, words penned to page over 300 years ago will utilize obsolete vocabulary, spelling, and grammar formations.

As an example: consider the popular King James Version of the Bible. If you started using ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ in your daily speech, people would understand you – but they would treat you like an alien in a time warp.

You can search the Internet for poetry written by contemporary authors. Try searches like:

• parallel translation poetry
• parallel translation poems
• parallel translation poems German English
• parallel translation poems French English
• parallel translation poetry Italian English
• parallel translation poetry Spanish English

Substitute search terms as necessary with the name of the specific language you are studying. Review the web pages you find with a tutor, professor, or knowledgeable person to determine grammar and vocabulary suitability.

Attempt to have the poetry dictated and recorded by a native language speaker. Softly recite the poetry while you listen to the recordings. This will improve your verbalization skills. With luck, you may find online audio for some of the poetry.

Are you a budding poet? Try creating foreign language poems yourself.

No poetic talent? Attempt the following simple approach. If you are learning German, for example, you might produce a ‘poem’ like this:

the dog – der Hund
the mouth – der Mund
the air – die Luft
the scent – der Duft
to buzz – summen
to growl – brummen
little – klein
clean – rein
to brood – grübeln
to iron – bügeln

You don’t have to worry about grammar – just definitions, pronunciations, gender, and spelling. Alcor (alcor.com.au) has several rhyming dictionaries that can assist you with this process.

If you have an audio dictionary on your computer, listen carefully to the pronunciation of each word. There are also excellent online dictionaries with audio.

Now produce your own poetry recording using audio capture software.

• First, dictate each English word or phrase and save as an individual file.

• Next, save foreign language audio clips from your dictionary or from the Internet.

• Now load your audio capture software and play the files in the correct order. Try to create short productions of a minute or two in duration.

• Edit if necessary to eliminate excessive pauses or add definite articles.

• Finally, convert to MP3 or WMA. Now you can use your iPod or portable media player for something besides music.

The 21st Century is a wonderful time to be learning a foreign language!

There are tons of options for learning a new language. Not a single technique can be considered right or wrong. What works for you will depend mostly upon how you learn and how accepting you are of the learning process. Some individuals prosper the most by learning in a classroom environment, while others have a more effortless time learning through audio and video materials. You might need to try a few different things before you figure out which method works best for you. After you figure that out, you have the ability to become totally bi-lingual. Here are some suggestions you can utilize if you aren’t sure where to begin for learning German.

Flashcards are a terrific learning mechanism. Many language students poke fun at the notion of utilizing flash card, as they appear childish and a bit out of date. Why use flash cards when there is such a plethora of highly advanced technologies that are available to assist you in learning? The motive for students utilizing flash cards is because of how great they work! Flash cards permit you to quiz yourself and to try out your skills. They are fairly simple to take with you when you are outside of your house or classroom. Flash cards make it easy to study with a friend, even if that friend is totally unaware of German.

You must prepare yourself for the feeling of being very uncomfortable at times. When you start out learning a new language, it’s always best to remember that everyone learning along with you is in the same boat. You can’t think that people are going to laugh at you if you mispronounce something or use the wrong word or verb conjugation. You cannot be aware of yourself and be afraid to fail and hope to learn a new language. When you aren’t self-conscious, you will learn at a much quicker pace. Keep in mind that when you take a beginner German class, the rest of the class is comprised of beginners too. Encourage yourself to make mistakes and jumble your words.

Is there a local neighborhood where most of the people speak German? Visiting a town like that might be beneficial. This is an easy way to immerse yourself in the language and to learn German while still having the comforts of home nearby if you get overwhelmed. Neighborhoods like these are great because the people who live and work in them use German the way it would be used in Germany (or any other country in which German is the main language). You will find that the German spoken on the street is very different from what you’ll learn in any text book. If you do this, you will feel much more at ease when you finally do visit Germany or some other German-speaking country. You can learn German in a few different ways. The most difficult part is finding the way that you best respond to. You simply need to try a few methods out. Learning a new language like German is all about finding what works. If you can’t learn German using your current method, try another one.

Is There a Secret to Learning a Foreign Language?

         By Kathy Steinemann

You know it’s true. Everyone has told you. You have to spend as much time as possible listening to a foreign language. But how?

You know it’s true. Everyone has told you. You have to spend as much time as possible listening to a foreign language. But how?

      Co-Workers – Friends – Family

If you are fortunate enough to have people around you who speak the language, spend as much time as you can with them. Be forewarned, though. Daily conversation with friends and relatives will probably be filled with idioms and grammar that would make your foreign language teacher nauseous.

      Internet Broadcasting

There are many free internet radio stations. They broadcast day and night, 7 days a week. All you have to do is find them. Try internet searches like the following in your favorite search engine:

      • free internet radio German
      • free internet radio Norwegian
      • free internet radio French
      • internet radio stations Spanish
      • internet radio stations Portuguese

Disc jockeys and talk show hosts may not use perfect grammar. However, news broadcasts are usually correct.

      Books on Tape or CD

You can purchase audio books online at sites like Amazon.

Unfortunately, not all audio books are created equal. Sometimes the narration is cluttered with distracting loud sound effects and music. The volume may vary from horrendously loud to whisper-soft. If you can listen to a sample before purchase, do so. Never purchase more than one audio book from the same publisher or narrator until you are sure that they produce acceptable recordings. Sometimes the narrator’s volume will vary so much during a reading that it makes the book almost useless.

Be on the lookout for audio bundles that include a printed copy of the book – excellent for learning purposes!

      TV Channels

Check your cable or satellite TV lineup. You may find one or more channels in the language you are trying to learn.

Movies and Television Series on DVD

Most larger centers and internet sites like Amazon have foreign language productions with English sound tracks and subtitles. Try to watch everything at least once without subtitles. Pay attention to the lips of the speakers as they pronounce words. Lipreading is part of the language learning process.

If you prefer to buy English productions that have been remastered for foreign language markets, you will lose the lipreading advantage – and you may have to purchase or hack a DVD player so that it will play DVDs from other regions. There is a link at the bottom of this article that goes to a page with more specific information.

North American TV series like M*A*S*H and Golden Girls have 1/2-hour episodes. Omit the intro and closing credits and you are left with about 20 minutes of material. Try to learn a few new words of vocabulary each time you watch an episode.

      What are You Waiting For?

Take advantage of all the opportunities that technology has to offer!

Learning German is truly a great way to develop self-awareness and an understanding of other people. You gain new insights and perspectives and enlarge your horizons by discovering a culture other than your own. Knowing how to speak German is quite worthwhile, with many practical uses such as for traveling, working, and socializing, and it will continue to be useful in many endeavors you undertake in life. The German language is not common in many countries outside Europe, and there is usually no national exam for students to take that demonstrates their language ability. The main goal of learning a new language should be to develop students interest in other languages and in the German culture itself.

Learning German is crucial in today’s world, so children should begin learning it in preschool and primary school. Speaking German is easier than you may think! Consider words like “Hand,” “Kindergarten,” and “Zeitgeist.” Since German and English share a common historical background, many words and grammatical structures are very similar. Learning to speak German does not have to be hard. Some native English speakers say it is much easier to learn than French.

Learning the German language is now made even simpler with many online courses, which offer affordable self-study audio courses that use a conversational approach lauded by millions. For years, the way to learn a language was through repetition and grammar drills – but current research shows that people learn best and retain more when engaged in meaningful, real life conversations. Learning German is like learning Latin or Greek — it brings you in contact with a culture which laid, together with the Romans and the Greeks, the basis of modern Western culture. You simply will not be able to fully understand Western culture if you don’t learn at least some Greek, German and Latin.

Discovering the German language is an adventure that many have taken on. If you want to truly explore a language that has endured for centuries, and that has historical and cultural values, then German is an excellent choice.

Learning a new language is not a game, nor an intellectual exercise. It’s about meeting and communicating with real people. Learning how to speak a foreign language is not as difficult as many people might think. You must put in a lot of effort though, if you want to be fluent in a foreign language.

Language comprehension increases rapidly as students gain valuable listening, speaking and pronunciation skills. Online courses can be repeated as often as desired to reinforce oral language skills and build vocabulary. Language anxiety is as real as math anxiety. The charm of using a good German language learning course is that they can welcome you, introduce you, make you feel comfortable and at home with speaking. Languages cannot be taught, they can only be learned. Theoretical grammatical explanations are hard to understand, hard to remember, and even harder to use.

Language is really one of the most important components of identity. Language skills are the key to understanding others.
